Zantac and links to cancer

In 2019, after tips from public watchdog groups, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted studies that showed that Zantac, the household heartburn medication, contained a cancer-causing chemical called NDMA. NDMA, identified as a likely carcinogen by both the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the US National Toxicology Program, poses a significant concern. The instability of the molecules within ranitidine, the key component of Zantac, is thought to facilitate the production of harmful levels of NDMA in the digestive system. The potential for NDMA to induce cancer is heightened following prolonged exposure to elevated doses.
